Nationale Bank probeert hrivna overeind te houden

REUTERS REUTERS The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) on March 17 set the official forex rate for March 18 at UAH 27.06 to the U.S. dollar, which let the country's national currency slump by 54 kopiykas. The Central Bank fixed the following official forex rates of the hryvnia against key foreign currencies for March 18: US$100 will be traded for UAH 2,705.66 (UAH 2,652.49 as of March 17); EUR 100 will be traded for UAH 2,972.71 (UAH 2,952.49 as of March 17). The regulator sold US$130.5 million at a currency auction on March 16 alone. There has been an increased demand for currency on Ukraine's forex market, formed by Ukrainian companies. However, foreign currency purchases by non-residents aiming to withdraw from domestic government loan bonds market is not yet significant, according to the NBU.

De Nationale Bank zet dagelijks forse bedragen aan dollars uit de reserves in om de hrivna te steunen. Alleen gisteren al werd 130,5 miljoen dollar verkocht en daarmee is het totaal op bijna een miljard dollar gekomen. De officiële koers is vandaag 27,06 hrivna voor een dollar en 29,73 hrivna voor een euro. Daarmee is de nationale munt ten opzichte van gisteren 54 kopeken in waarde gedaald.

Er is grote vraag naar buitenlandse valuta vanwege de grote onzekerheid over het effect van het coronavirus op de Oekraïense economie. Bovendien stokt de aanvoer van dollars en euro's bij de banken als gevolg van de vervoersbeperkingen.
