Metropoliet Pavel van de Oekraïens-orthodoxe kerk van het Moskouse patriarchaat is opgenomen op de lijst van Mirotvorets (Vredestichter), een organisatie die een database bijhoudt van mensen die zich vijandig gedragen ten opzichte van Oekraïne. De vicaris van de Kyiv Petsjersk Lavra dreigt in een interview op video met ''Gods toorn'' voor iedereen die het waagt om het beroemde holenklooster weg te halen bij wat hij ziet als de rechtmatige eigenaar.

De Oekraïens-orthodoxe kerk van het Kyivse patriarchaat staat na een kwart eeuw op het punt om door het oecumenisch patriarchaat van Constantinopel als zelfstandige kerk erkend te worden, los van de Russisch-orthodoxe kerk. Het Moskouse patriarchaat is formeel ook zelfstandig, maar wordt in de praktijk vanuit Rusland aangestuurd.

De kerk bezit diverse heiligdommen, waaronder de Petsjersk Lavra, en vreest die kwijt te raken als het Kyivse patriarchaat de autocefale status krijgt. Er zijn al diverse dreigementen geuit, onder meer van pro-Russische politici, en het dreigen met een vervloeking door metropoliet Pavel past in dat patroon.
