Handtekeningen gezet onder afschaffing visum

De handtekeningen zijn gezet en dus kan er niets meer mis gaan. De visumplicht van Oekraine voor de Europese Unie is over 3,5 week verleden tijd. Voorzitter Antionio Tajani en de Maltese minister Carmleo Abelo ondertekenden vanmiddag het besluit om de visumplicht af te schaffen. Dat gebeurde in Straatsburg, in aanwezigheid van de Oekraiense president Petro Porosjenko en Europarlementariër Maria Gabriel die als rapporteur een belangrijke rol speelde bij het totstandkomen van het besluit.

Het is nu nog even geduld hebben voor de Oekraïners. Twintig dagen na de officiële publicatie van het besluit wordt de visumplicht daadwerkelijk afgeschaft. Dat is volgens de slimme rekenaars met ingang van zondag 11 juni. De Oekraïners kunnen vanaf die dag zonder visum maar mét een biometrisch paspoort 90 dagen binnen een periode van 180 dagen naar het Schengengebied reizen.

After signing, the legislative act should be published in the EU's Official Journal. The visa-free regime will come into force in 20 days. As UNIAN reported earlier, the Council of the European Union on May 11, 2017, adopted a regulation on visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens traveling to the EU for a period of stay of 90 days in any 180-day period. The legislative act of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union was approved without further debate, within the framework of the meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council.
