Zelenski: 'Ik denk dat Poetin nu wel begrijpt dat Oekraïne een onafhankelijk land is'

President Volodimir Zelenski meent dat de Russische president Vladimir Poetin inmiddels wel heeft begrepen dat Oekraïne niet opnieuw een ondergeschikte rol wil spelen. Op de vraag van een verslaggever van een Israëlische krant over Poetin's gedachten over Oekraïne antwoordt Zelenski: ''Ik heb geen idee wat er in zijn hoofd om gaat. Hij heeft het me niet verteld, maar ik denk dat hij wel begrijpt hoe ik er over denk, dat Oekraïne een onafhankelijk land is. We zijn een groot land, zelfs het grootste land in Europa. Ik denk dat hij dat wel begrijpt.''

Zelenski zegt in het interview ook dat hij het vrede in Oost-Oekraïne het belangrijkste doel van zijn presidentschap vindt. ''Zonder dit doel zou ik geen president willen zijn.''

Met Poetin heeft hij inmiddels een zekere mate van verstandhouding weten op te bouwen in de afgelopen maanden. ''We zijn met elkaar in gesprek, we hadden meerdere telefoongesprekken en we hebben een aantal gevoelige punten aangeroerd. Na drie jaar is het overleg van de Normandische Vier hervat. We hebben gevangenen geruild en we hebben onze schepen terug.''

Het interview in The Times of Israel vormt de inleiding op een bezoek van president Zelenski aan Israël, waar hij de herdenking van 75 jaar bevrijding van het concentratiekamp Auschwitz bijwoont. Eén op de vier Joodse slachtoffers van de Nazi-terreur kwam uit Oekraïne. Alleen al in Babi Jar werden 150.000 Oekraïense Joden vermoord. ''Daarom is het zo belangrijk dat wij als Oekraïners de slachtoffers van de Holocaust herdenken.''
