Britse fotograaf raakt zwaargewond in Avdiivka

De Britse persfotograaf Christopher Nunn is gisteravond in de stad Avdiivka zwaargewond geraakt bij een beschieting door pro-Russische rebellen. Een granaat raakte een radiator in de woning waar Nunn verbleef. Daarop volgde een gasexplosie waarbij Nunn ernstig oogletsel opliep. Hij is overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis Mechnikov in Dnipro. De fotograaf is één oog kwijt, artsen proberen het andere oog nog te redden.

Bij de aanval van gisteravond werden twee inwoners van Avdiivka gedood. Tot grote woede van gouverneur Pavlo Zhebrivski van de provincie Donetsk was het een doelbewuste aanval van de rebellen op het stadscentrum. De granaten kwamen neer bij een stadion en een school die dient als coördinatiepunt voor humanitaire hulp.

Vanmorgen vroeg waren in totaal 200 inwoners van Avdiivka geëvacueerd, waaronder 95 kinderen. Er wordt nog altijd geschoten in de omgeving van de stad.

A state of emergency was declared in the town January 31 amid fears of a humanitarian disaster while the shellings from heavy artillery are ongoing.
