Het Russische leger rukt tijdens de woensdag begonnen paraatheidsoefening steeds verder op richting de buurlanden. Eerder werd al gemeld dat vijftien Russische oorlogsschepen op de Zwarte Zee zijn aangekomen, terwijl nog eens tien schepen op de Kaspische Zee klaar liggen. Ook zijn speciale troepen vanuit het noordwesten van Rusland naar het Zuidelijke Militaire District gevlogen.

Bommenwerpers, straaljagers, transportvliegtuigen en aanvalshelikopters maken volgens het Russische ministerie van Defensie vluchten over 500 tot zelfs 2.500 kilometer. Met Il-76 militaire transportvliegtuigen zijn technici en de benodigde apparatuur overgevlogen. De onaangekondigde paraatheidsoefening betreft zo'n 100.000 soldaten en duurt tot en met komende woensdag.

In de buurlanden wordt met grote ongerustheid gekeken naar wat zich vlak aan de grens voltrekt. Oekraïne houdt rekening met een Russische invasie, terwijl de Litouwse regering Rusland er van beschuldigt dat voor een gevaarlijke escalatie zorgt. De paraatheidsoefening wordt ''een ernstige provocatie'' genoemd. In Polen wordt met bezorgdheid gekeken naar wat zich in de Russische enclave Kaliningrad afspeelt.
